On Tuesday, November 21st, 2023, New Jersey State Officials announced the filing to adopt the Advanced Clean Cars II Rule. This follows through on Governor Phil Murphy’s pledge back in February to accelerate the state’s push towards 100% clean energy by 2035.

Key Factors of the Rule:

  • By 2027 – At least 43% of auto-manufacturer’s production volume must be Zero-Emission Vehicles.
  • From 2027 to 2035 – Percentage of production volume that must be Zero-Emission Vehicles will increase each year.
  • By 2035 and onward – 100% of production volume must be Zero-Emission Vehicles.

This initiative will work to phase out the sale of new gasoline powered passenger vehicles, with almost half of all new cars produced being Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) within the next 4 years. Currently, only 12% of new vehicle sales are ZEVs.

As the number of Electric Vehicles on the road continues to rise with the new mandate, your community’s demand for EV charging stations will follow. Communities should be seeking to evaluate their long and short term needs to ensure these charging station projects are well integrated into their Community Master Plans.
