September 8, 2025

If your New Jersey building received its Certificate of Occupancy (C.O.) before January 8, 2009, a structural integrity inspection is required by January 8, 2026, under the Residential Structural Integrity Law (P.L. 2023, c.214).
Key Requirements:
- Inspection Deadline: Buildings with a C.O. issued before January 8, 2009, must complete a structural assessment by January 8, 2026.
- Scope of Inspection: A licensed NJ engineer evaluates the primary load-bearing system, including columns, beams, and foundations.
- Report Submission: The engineer’s report detailing findings, recommendations, and follow-up schedule must be submitted to your local construction official.
- Follow-Up Inspections: Additional inspections are required per the engineer’s recommendations—typically every 5–10 years depending on building age.
