The process of analyzing a potential construction defect commences with an understanding of the results or effects that the defect is causing and the general description of what has been observed to acknowledge that there is a defect.

Experience in defect analysis then comes into play in the process of forming a plan of attack. Typically the process begins with interview of the owner/management and or maintenance personnel.  If as-built or design plans are available, an understanding of the structure or system to be inspected is beneficial prior to visual inspection.  Visual inspection is performed and applicable measurements are taken.  Once the visual inspection is completed a review of the material collected to date will either yield an answer to the proposed problem or it will yield the requirement for gaining additional data via various testing, or invasive/deconstructive inspection to further understand the systems, defect and resulting conditions.
